On the eve of the RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 4 finale and highly-anticipated “coronation,” the top three finalists took a moment from a busy press tour to drop by the NYC LGBT Center’s After School Program for a private meet-and-greet and performance. For the second year in a row, the youth, ranging in age from 13-21 got a chance to meet their favorite queens in person, ask them questions and pose for photos.
Making dramatic entrances, each queen performed a special solo number for the crowd. Chad Michaels channeled his famous Cher routine with “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me,” while Phi Phi O’Hara danced and lip-synched to Nikki Minaj. Sharon Needles – clearly the crowd favorite and eventual winner of the crown on that night’s reunion episode – stayed spooky, performing a slowed and darker version of Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi.”
The visit gave the queens an opportunity to connect with some of their youngest fans and give back in a meaningful way. Said one young fan in attendance: “It’s hard being different. We need this kind of encouragement…to know we’re special, and not in a bad way.”
Another said: “What I learned from all the contestants [today] is just mainly to be yourself.”
